Anton Valley Birds (El Valle Panama)

El Valle Panama is home to around 350 species of birds, including some of the rarest and most beautiful species in the world.

Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo Neomorphus geoffroyi

Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo / Neomorphus geoffroyi / an extremely rare bird easily found in Anton's Valley, Panama

The Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo is an almost mythical species, the "Holy Grail" for many birders visiting Panama. It is a ground-dwelling and shy follower of army ant swarms, and most birders are happy with even a fleeting glimpse of this elusive species. The El Valle Panama area is the best place in the world to find this spectacular bird- expert researchers in South American have gone years without spotting any of the several ground-cuckoo species that reside there; in El Valle we find them on a regular basis, and often see them quite clearly! Check with the staff of the Canopy Adventure or with one of our local birding guides for the latest news regarding the splendid Rufous-vented Ground-Cuckoo.
